Can Kids Ride E-Bikes in Zion? Age Rules + Family Options

Family making unforgettable memories exploring Zion on our tandem e-bikes.

Planning a family trip to Zion National Park and thinking about renting bikes? One of the most common questions we get at Zion Cycles is:
“Can my kids ride an e-bike in Zion?”

The answer depends on a few key factors like age, height, and experience. And if they’re not quite ready, there are still some incredible ways for the whole family to explore Zion by bike.

E-Bike Age Requirements in Zion National Park

Class 1 E-bikes are allowed on all paved roads and bike paths in Zion, including the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive and the Pa’rus Trail.

However, most outfitters (including Zion Cycles) require:

  • Minimum age: 13 years old

  • Minimum height: ~5’0” (for proper fit and control)

  • Basic biking experience and confidence

These guidelines aren’t just rules. They’re about safety and making sure your ride is actually enjoyable.

Why Kids Under 13 Typically Can’t Ride E-Bikes

E-bikes make Zion way more accessible, but they come with a few challenges:

  • Heavier than standard bikes

  • Faster acceleration

  • Long distances (up to 18 miles round trip)

  • Shared road with shuttles and other riders

For younger kids, that can be a lot to handle.

That’s why most shops stick to the 13+ rule for e-bike rentals in Zion National Park. Bike-related incidents are actually one of the most common emergency calls in the park, and with the added speed and power of e-bikes, things can escalate quickly without the right experience and awareness.

On top of that, it’s not just a shop preference, it’s largely driven by insurance requirements. In order for companies to legally operate and rent e-bikes, we have to follow strict guidelines set by our insurance providers. If we allow riders under the approved age and something were to happen, we risk losing coverage entirely, which would shut down our ability to operate.

So even if your child is 12 and a very capable rider, we unfortunately can’t make exceptions. It’s about keeping everyone safe and making sure we’re operating responsibly within the rules that allow us to offer these experiences in the first place.

Best Alternatives for Kids Who Can’t Ride E-Bikes

If your kids are under 13 or not quite tall enough, you’ve still got great options. This is where most families actually end up having the best experience.
